Built by a Spanish soldier sent by King Charles III of Spain to find gold, the hacienda has been a trading post on the El Camino Real and a stagecoach stop between Santa Fe and Mexico City. In its heyday, it boasted 28 rooms, a cantina and a mercantile store. Today the gentle courtyard is a peaceful retreat of dancing sunlight, shady portals and a dazzling, ever-changing display of flowers. Listen to the trickling fountain, snooze in the hammock by the swimming pool, and relax in the hot tub under the big New Mexico sky. A hearty, palate-pleasing breakfast is served in the sun-splashed courtyard in the summer, and in front of a crackling kiva fireplace in the winter. A different menu greets guests each day with entrees such as decadent waffles, sumptuous egg casseroles with a taste of the delicious New Mexican green chile, and a knock-out bread pudding that sends everyone back for more.
